Description

Whether you are monitoring microclimates for agriculture or tracking storms from your backyard, the Weather Meter Kit provides the three fundamental mechanical sensors needed to build your own custom weather station. This kit strips away the complex, proprietary protocols of commercial units, giving you direct access to the raw data for wind speed, wind direction, and rainfall.

Simple, Passive Electronics

The beauty of this kit lies in its simplicity. None of the sensors uses active electronics; instead, they rely on sealed magnetic reed switches and passive components. This means you won’t need any complex libraries to talk to them. All you'll need is a simple voltage source and basic logic on your microcontroller (such as an Arduino or ESP32) to read the switch closures and resistance values.

Sensors Included

  • Rain Gauge: A self-emptying bucket mechanism activates a momentary button closure for every 0.011" (0.2794 mm) of rain collected.
  • Anemometer: Measures wind speed by closing a switch once per rotation. A wind speed of 1.492 MPH generates exactly one switch closure per second.
  • Wind Vane: Reports wind direction as a variable voltage produced by a combination of internal resistors. While it can technically indicate up to 16 positions, it reliably resolves eight cardinal directions (N, NE, E, etc.).

Easy Integration

All sensors are supplied with RJ11-terminated cables for clean, modular connections. While some basic assembly is required to assemble the masts, the standardized connectors and mechanical simplicity make this the perfect starting point for any weather-logging project.
