SparkFun Non-Invasive Current Sensor Kit

Safely measure AC power consumption without cutting wires using this complete kit, featuring the ADE7953 Qwiic Current Sensor and a Split-Core Current Transformer.

Description

Easily monitor the power drawn by your AC devices without having to disconnect circuits, cut wires, or splice lines. The SparkFun Non-Invasive Current Sensor Kit gives you everything you need to safely measure AC energy consumption data all via I2C and the Qwiic Connect System. At the heart of this kit is the Qwiic-enabled ADE7953 single-phase multifunction metering IC from Analogue Devices, paired with a 100A to 50mA split-core current transformer for a solderless, non-invasive sensor solution.

Non-Invasive Current Metering

The ADE7953 at the heart of the Qwiic Current Sensor is a single-phase multifunction metering IC that can also measure neutral current on a second channel. It's highly accurate with less than 0.1% error in measuring both active and reactive energy over a dynamic range of 3000:1. It also provides an instantaneous IRMS measurement with less than 0.2% error. The ADE7953 communicates over I2C (Default), SPI, and UART. These interfaces are hardware selectable by adjusting solder jumpers on the board.

The included current clamp features a ferrite core and a 13mm by 13mm opening, making it easy to wrap around your existing cables. Once clamped, it provides a 50mA output at its 100A rated input and supports a frequency range of 50Hz to 150kHz. It maintains an accurate ±3% non-linearity from 10% to 120% of the rated input current.

Hardware Connections and Breakouts

To make using the Non-Invasive Current Sensor as straightforward as possible, this kit provides several physical connection points for your monitoring hardware:

  • Audio Jack Input: A 3.5mm jack connects to the ADE7953's Current Channel A, allowing users to easily connect the included current clamp directly to the board.
  • Solderless Data: Dual Qwiic connectors provide a simple, daisy-chainable I2C connection to your main system.
  • Current Channel Access: The board also breaks out both the A and B current channels to plated-through-hole pins but does not break out the ADE7953's voltage measurement channel, so this board can only measure AC current.

Finally, the current sensor has a 0.1"-spaced plated through-hole (PTH) header that breaks out the ADE7953's power and communication pins. It also routes to the ADE7953's interrupt pin and the Channel A zero-crossing pin. The Interrupt pin is a user-configurable active-VALUE signal that indicates events. The zero-crossing pin outputs a pulse each time the current waveform crosses zero, thereby determining the line frequency and synchronising measurements to the AC cycle.
