Description

The ESP8266 is a WiFi chip that is very popular for creating IoT (Internet of Things) projects and is partly responsible for people saying "Internet of Things" too much.

The SparkFun ESP8266 WiFi Shield is an Arduino shield that makes it easy and quick to add WiFi capabilities with the familiarity of an Arduino Uno board.

Get your toaster or other IOT device sending data to the cloud with phant.io or Azure.

The ESP8266 WiFi Soc is also used in the SparkFun Thing if you don't need to stay with an Arduino Uno form factor or fly close to the ground with the ESP8266 WiFi module which can be included into any project.

AT-Command firmware has been flashed to the board so it can be controlled via serial commands from an Arduino. The rest of the ESP8266 pins are also broken out in case you need them. 12 digital I/O pins (including one ADC) are available and the board can be re-flashed with custom firmware as needed.

The shield as ready made except for the headers that must be soldered in. Headers sold separately. We recommend Arduino R3 Stackable Header Kit.
