Sometimes a power source may start higher than requirement and drain until lower than required. These regulators enable the use of stable DC power from a battery as it gets discharged below the regulated voltage allowing for more power to be extracted or less cells to be used.
Adjustable regulators are also available for when the regulated output is not a standard voltage.
