Resistors are passive components that set currents and voltages, form voltage dividers, create pull-ups and pull-downs, limit LED current, and act as shunts for sensing or damping. They suit breadboard prototyping, compact surface-mount PCBs, power-handling circuits and simple analogue or timing networks.
Available attributes include resistance range, power rating from fractional watts to multiwatt power resistors, tolerance and precision grades, SMD versus plated through-hole, lead thickness for breadboards, and automotive qualification for harsher environments. These characteristics determine performance, compatibility, reliability and ease of integration. Unlike active parts, resistors provide predictable, non‑directional passive behaviour rather than amplification or switching.
